Carmine Guarino obtained his Agronomic Sciences degrees at the Faculty of Agriculture in 1986, University of Naples 'Federico II', and in 1987 qualified to practice as a Doctor of Agriculture and Forestry.
During 1987-89, he was in charge of new museological displays of live plants at the Botanical Garden of Naples. From 1989 to 1991, he directed the work on the re-functionalization of exotic plant collections at the Royal Sites of the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Museum and Park of Capodimonte (Naples), commissioned by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. Since 1991 he has been called to serve on the National Committee for the Conservation of Parks, Gardens and Historic Landscapes at the Ministry For Cultural Heritage and Activities. In 1992, he was appointed by the Superintendence for Environmental and Architectural Heritage of Naples and Province to provide scientific coordination for the restoration and maintenance of Capodimonte Park.
From 1992 to 1996, he carried out research and supplementary teaching at the Teaching of 'Phytogeography and Art of Gardens', at the University of Naples 'Federico II', and at the Teaching of 'History of Parks, Historic Gardens and Botanical Gardens', at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University Institute.
In 1996 he won the competition as a researcher in Systematic Botany (BIO/02), in 2011 he became Associate Professor in Systematic Botany (BIO/02), and in 2021 he became Full Professor in Systematic Botany (BIO/02) at the University of Sannio.
During these years and still now, he is involved in: Soil, air, and water bioremediation with a focus on the relationships between microorganisms and plants; omics approach (metagenomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics); study of the complex relationships between plants and microorganisms under abiotic stress conditions; mechanisms of environmental adaptation in plants from molecular to global scales; ecosystem services in urban cities; ethnobotany and economic flora; plant and plant extracts with a focus on secondary raw materials; historic gardens and botanical gardens.
